Innovation project for tree nurseries

De Stamhouder

FoodInsights is developing the connection between automated tree measurements and information a grower can act on, bringing measurements, location and stock data together in a digital file per tree.

The FoodInsights contribution to the ‘Meten boomdiktes’ sub-project within AgroBots 3.

De Stamhouder is the working name of the software layer FoodInsights is developing within this sub-project. It is not an official grant title.
Why

Better stock control starts with reliable tree data

A stock overview you can work from needs current information about every tree. Which tree stands where? What is the measured trunk diameter? And how do new measurements reach the systems the grower actually uses?

Within the sub-project the partners combine automated tree measurement with an autonomous vehicle and a data platform. De Stamhouder is the data that comes out of it: collected, checked, connected and made available for daily operations.

The aim is less manual processing and a more dependable view of trees and stock. The development work and the field trials have to show how much of an improvement is realistic.

A hand holds a tape measure around a tree trunk to read off the circumference.
How it goes today. One measurement per tree, written down by hand and typed over afterwards. Wherever that work backs up, the stock overview stops being current.
How it works

From a measurement in the field to information in the office

This is the intended way of working that we are developing with the project partners and testing in practice.

Measure automatically

Vision technology measures the trunk diameter. An autonomous vehicle supports the collection of data between the trees.

Connect the data

De Stamhouder ties a measurement to the right tree and links it to location and stock data.

A file per tree

The digital tree passport brings identity, measurements and available background information together.

Put it to use

The grower gets a basis for following growth, keeping stock current, and supporting reservation and marking processes.

Tree passport

One recognisable file per tree

The tree passport is where the data about a tree comes together. A measurement only means something once it is clear which tree it belongs to, when it was taken and what the source was. Successive measurements then form a growth history.

Which data is recorded and shared is something we are working out with the partners. Access to business data is agreed with the users involved.

The diameter value is for demonstration only. Diameter in millimetres is not the same thing as trunk circumference or a commercial size class.

Intended results

What we are working towards

These are the results De Stamhouder is aiming at. They are development goals, not demonstrated outcomes.

Connected data

Automated exchange between measurements, location data and the existing stock or ERP system.

A digital tree passport

A traceable file in which the data about the same tree stays together.

A view of growth and availability

A basis for growth history, current stock control and support for reservation and marking.

Use in practice

Testing with project partners and users, so that the result fits the work in the nursery.

Sharing what we learn

Making experience and findings available to the wider tree nursery sector.

Partners

Developed together, out of practice

Automated tree measurement calls for measurement technology, vehicle engineering, data processing and the practice of the nursery to work together.

FoodInsights

Develops the data connections and the digital tree passport, and links measurements to stock processes.

AgroWizard

Brings expertise in vision technology and automated trunk diameter measurement.

AIgro

Brings expertise in autonomous vehicle technology and in carrying out measurements in the field.

Boomkwekerij Udenhout

Brings the practice of the tree nursery into the development and testing of the solution.
